SEPTEMBER 11th CLASS
"Remembering 9/11 and Anticipating 5773: How might we love our neighbor as ourselves?"
Taught by Rabbi Patricia Karlin-Neumann

In an increasingly global world, the notion of "neighbor" has expanded. What does Jewish tradition understand about who our neighbor is, how we treat the stranger, what it means to love another and who is included in that love. We will examine the blblical text, "vahavta le'reacha kamocha" -- "you shall love your neighbor as yourself" and others to see how we might apply it in a post 9/11 world.

Rabbi Patricia Karlin-Neumann is the Senior Associate Dean for Religious Life at Stanford University. She is the first university chaplain from a tradition other than Christianity in Stanford's history. She works with students from many religious traditions, leading the Fellowship for Religious Encounter and Stanford's response to President Obama's Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. She is married to biologist George Karlin-Neumann, and is the mother of Chana, a teacher at the Aspire East Palo Alto Charter School and Zev, an associate at the West Wing Writers in Washington, DC.
